A couple of you asked about the story behind the rock from my post the other day. I thought rather than attempting to explain in comments I’d just write a blog post about it.
Back over Labor Day weekend 2011 (one week before Alex and I’s second anniversary) I went down to Florida with a good friend for the weekend. Alex and I had been having a lot of problems, and quite frankly the weekend was a way for me to get away.
At that point it was basically deciding whether marriage counseling was working enough that we’d keep trying.
While I was gone I tried to get a hold of Alex one night to complete and utter failure. When we next we spoke I was a tad ticked off because I feel that while a call can be missed, there is no reason whatsoever for multiple calls and voice mails over a 24 hour period to somehow be “missed” when the only thing you should have been doing was hanging out around your house.
Anyway, he explained he was unavailable because he went camping the night before in an area with next to no cell phone reception and while out there he found this heart rock that he wanted me to have when I got home. I’ll be honest I didn’t believe him because of a previous history that led in part to our troubles up unto that point.
When I did get home that Monday evening the rock was sitting on the counter. After I absorbed that fact I asked him why he got the rock. He explained that when he went camping he went to think and when he saw the rock he knew that he loved me. That he wanted to fight for our marriage. That he wasn’t giving up.
When things in our relationship and marriage erupted not even 24 hours later, as the weeks went by every time I had a bad moment I’d look at the rock. I even took to carrying it around in my purse as a reminder.
Now it lives on my night stand where I see it before we go to bed and when I wake up in the morning. And every time I do I smile to myself and remember that Alex saw it, thought of me, and that he still is my rock.

This made me cry, it is such a touching story……..
