Sewn With Love

Hey y’all, I just wanted to take a quick second and let y’all know a couple of blog details. 1. I’ve put in single post navigation arrows on either side of the blog. You’ll see them if you’ve opened all the way to post on the left and rigth of the screen. 2. I’ve updated several pages from the contacts page on the blog to the Facebook page. Be sure to check them out and give me a shout out. Love y’all bunches! Now on to the goodness.

My lovely friend is having a baby soon. As in sometime in the next month. So, as I’m not expecting any time soon myself, I’ve dedicate all my love to showering both her and her husband and their child with love. And affection. And perhaps a tad many gifts.

(Although one can never have too many gifts. It’s against the law.)

(Or it ought to be if it isn’t already.)

One of things I gave her at her baby shower was a fun baby blanket. It was super easy to make and its something anyone who has a sewing machine can make themselves! You’ll need a whopping four things besides the sewing machine.

1. Pick out a soft no-pile fleece and get the yardage you want to make. In my case I did 2 yards because I wanted a blanket that could be used as a floor “mat” under toys and be kept for as she gets older.

2. Next you need to get satin blanket binding in whichever color you want to use. I got pale pink because Shelly is having a girl and the blanket needed a bit of “girly-fying.”

(Also because everything else I leaned towards was geared towards a boy, so this was to remind myself ITS A GIRL.)

3. & 4. The last two things are easy! Thread and pins.

The first thing you’ll need to do is pin the binding all around the edge of the fleece. Make sure you miter the corners and overlap edges if you use than more one packet of binding.

Now, start on a seam where the binding “starts” and sew down from the outside being sure to catch the edge of the top side with your thread. You’ll want to reverse your stitch a small amount to secure this thread.

Now get down to your lower edge, turn the blanket and sew sew sew along the straight edges until you get to your first corner!

The corner is going to be the biggest pain in the butt. It involves folding and refolding and sewing up and back down but when your all finished it looks really good! I’m not going to try to improve on perfection, but instead direct you to the directions I followed at Instructables {dot} com.

Continue these steps until you are finished with all corner and sides. Turn the blanket at your entering seam and sew back and off the blanket to finish. That’s it! See its super easy and when you are done you’ll have the cutest blanket for someone you love. icon smile Sewn With Love

I remember the first time you sewed at my house years ago — we made poodle skirts and I think you also made some shorts. I wondered at the time if you’d ever start to love sewing. You are now doing a beautiful job, and I’m so pleased!

I’ll probably never LOVE sewing, but its definitely a skill I’m glad I have.
