July Fourth / Birthday Recap

The Fourth aka my birthday started off fabulous the night before when I won the closet organizing system from Home Depot. At dinner that night I asked Alex for something I’ve always wanted but never gotten. A whole lot of lazy!

When I woke up that morning he had seriously delivered. First the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was this lovely mirror. I have wanted one of these for a while (ever since our cats shattered my mirror from childhood) and I just hadn’t found one I loved yet. Alex found this beauty and assembled it so that I saw this first when I actually woke up.

THEN….he got up and wandered into the kitchen to make me breakfast in bed. I did end up cheating a little, I got up and took the dog for a walk, but I got right back in bed to continue my goal of being utterly lazy. Soon thereafter I had this little gem in my lap. It was glorious!

After this we went out to the stores – I wanted a fun holiday shirt, but we ended up at like 6 stores before we finally found one that was 1. Cute and 2. Super cheap. (It was my bday but no way would I spend $10+ on a shirt that would be on clearance the very next day.) Anyway, we finally found one at Target so we bought it and headed back home.

At home we gathered up camera, tripod, and ME so we could go to my parents! At Mom and Dad’s Alex helped me make some pasta salad for dinner (they like my version) before we settled down to just relax and enjoy time together. After dinner we went outside to mess with random small fireworks. I set up the camera and tripod so that when it got dark we could really have fun!

In order to “kill time” we went upstairs to eat cake / get presents / celebrate the greatness that is my life icon wink July Fourth / Birthday Recap . The cake was lovely and my favorite kind (the family knows me well) but I just couldn’t resist posing!

Finally it was dark and that meant LEGAL EXPLOSIVES!!! Rather than bore you with words here is a montage of fireworks.

I will add one note before this last picture clump. By this point it was 11:30 at night. We were trying to hurry it up because shooting fireworks late at night and on a week night does not a good neighbor make. Anyway, we THOUGHT we had picked a good one to end. It was supposed to be mostly colorful bursts. What it ended up being was LOUD bomb bursts, high above the houses, with a huge siren like noise near the end. My parents’ neighbor even came outside kind of grumpy. OOPS!!!

That was it – the last of the holiday. Dad did send me this picture the next day of the “aftermath” but y’all this is only a drop in the bucket. We cut out over half of what we had planned to shoot off because of time. I love my birthday!

Support a Soldier

As y’all know I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety in the last year or so. (Well I’ve been more open about it in that time.) About two or three months ago, one of the biggest struggles I was having was “Who Am I?”

Now honestly, I still haven’t figured that out so please don’t go asking me to tell you. My About Me page is a constant work in progress as I struggle to define just who precisely I am. However, in seeking this answer one of the things I decided I wanted to be was more giving. In other words, I wanted to make sure that my brain stopped looking in on itself as often and started looking towards others.

To that end, I signed up and adopted me a soldier! Now I didn’t just randomly show up at a base and point my finger and say “I’m adopting you!” No, I signed up with AAUSS and requested to adopt a soldier. Then I waited while they sorted through their database for someone I could “adopt.”

I got my email about “My Soldier” a few weeks later and found out that the area he is located is rather a remote part of Afghanistan. He also had a few items he’d really like, but if I couldn’t send them then the letters / emails were more than enough.

So over the last week or so we started to gather items together. Some magazines (some of which I totally made Alex select and buy because I’m a shy gal … this greatly amused our SINGLE GUY soldier when I shared the story) (really use your imagination on that request) and some snacks of various types made it into the box. Then I contacted the ever so great hint of a phone # where you can order flat rate boxes for your soldier FOR FREE. This really helps me to send more stuff because the USPS also supports our troops and supports those of us who want to support our troops.

It’s just a huge bundle of support!

{Shoot me a message via the contact page if you need this info so you can support a soldier too}

Luckily this past weekend it all came together and now just in time for the Fourth I’m able to send this little package off to our soldier.

As American’s most of us will enjoy a break next Wednesday. We’ll get to eat burgers, maybe go to the lake, watch some fireworks, and in general celebrate. That ability, that RIGHT to do so is being fought for every day by troops still in dangerous areas. They miss their family, their friends and to quote my soldier directly when he explained he didn’t know the holiday was up coming:

The days get all meshed together and weeks and so on … i rarely know what day of the week it is … hey what ever you can send to help is fine i don’t mind. Thanks again for the support it truly means a lot to me.

I know this war is controversial, and honestly I don’t even want to get into that. However, I would like y’all to please consider at the very least sending a letter to a soldier this holiday just to say “Thanks.” It means so much to them because they often times feel forgotten. When you are thousand of miles away from home, when you are tired and dirty, when you are in areas that are so dangerous that it often means you don’t’ know when you’ll be able to call home again and say “I love you” a simple letter says SO MUCH to our troops. They aren’t forgotten. They are supported. They are missed.

I feel so much more vested in my right to eat birthday cake next week and really, I have a better idea of who I am now that I’ve taken this step. I know this may not be “the thing” for all of y’all but I do hope as the next week to week and a half passes that y’all all remember that Freedom does not come Free.

Prepping for the Fourth

Y’all, July is next week. WTF is up with that? This also means that next week is my birthday and to say I’m so not prepared for that is an understatement. Dear Family – I have no bloody clue what I want unless you know how to gift a brain for clearly mine is lacking.

Anyway, in part due to my birthday and in part due to the good ol’ U.S. of A. we celebrate each Fourth of July (regardless of the weather if you recall) with a lot of things that go KA-BOOM. Which meant that we seriously needed to get our game on in terms of prepping.

So my Dad, as he does almost every year, decided that it was time for a quick road trip over the border to TN. Copperhill, TN to be specific. This year, I joined in so that I could select some of my favorite colors, shapes, and styles of various fireworks BIRTHDAY CANDLES BABY!

Dad, being Dad, and wise in the ways of OMG its hot down here decided we had to be up and at ‘em bright and early Saturday morning. So rather than sleep in I was up by 8 a.m. getting some blue jeans, sneakers, t-shirt and helmet on. Why a helmet? Well because Dad road trips on a motorcycle. (Seriously y’all I’ve been riding with him since I was an infant.)

Along the way we passed a cycling race and I had to laugh because we were on a bike and they were on a bike. Their bike may be much more healthy for everyone and everything, but our bike is a lot faster! (And shiny…what this gal’s favorite color is chrome.) Once we got to TN I walked around to encourage blood to settle back into my bum and thus lose the constant vibration feeling that several hours on a motorcycle will do to you. 20 minutes in the store and we had cleaned up!

Or in other words, spent the maximum allowable by Bank of Daddy budget. Well that and you know avoiding the “how could I set my house on fire this year” type fireworks. This meant it was time to load up and head on back. A quick photo of us, before we melted of heat in our helmets and we were back on the road.

What did y’all do this weekend and what are your plans for the Fourth?

Easter Tails

It’s the tail end of Easter Sunday and I’m here on the computer typing out blog posts, editing headers (yea its messed up…work in progress), while Alex is in the living room with our new house guest. (Long story.)

We’re kind of boring that way, but I will say the Easter Bunny did make an appearance in our house. He managed to drop off baskets for three people and we’re each very grateful.

Caleb received a new coffee mug supporting his home team OU (in fact it’s not even in this photo because he liked it so much he used it right away) and some fun books, gift cards, and the ever popular candy.

Alex received a humming-bird feeder, a Route 66 paperweight, and more candy.

Me? I got booze baby!!! I also got candy but only after I had to hunt around the darn house for eggs. This is what I get for making Alex hunt for his entire basket last year.

(Really I think more holidays should involve the gifting of wine.)

(That makes me sound….well over 21, which handily enough I am.)
