A {fine} Hot Mess

I feel like I ought to have a ton more pics to go with my blog posts lately, but it’s just not happening. This isn’t to say I’m not taking photos, because I am it’s just that I never have time to take them off my camera. Then by the time I DO get them off – its like “meh” they don’t go with anything anymore. Plus I’m trying to figure out a better way to put photos on the blog that won’t KILL my server.

Since my Daddy is my host server (Thanks Daddy web-guru man!) I don’t want to crash his stuff. I’ve tried Photobucket, I’ve tried Flickr, but the free versions aren’t living up to my needs any more. SmugMug is great but you have to pay. Help!!

Do y’all have any suggestions?

It’s a hot mess and I have the t-shirt to prove it!

Georgia humidity is to blame for the hair

So I’ve had it in my head lately that the house needs to be fixed like RIGHT.NOW. I’m tired of living with nasty linoleum, gray trim everything, and most importantly gray cabinet everything.

So two weekends ago I had my Daddy help me remove all the doors, etc to the kitchen cabinets and primed everything. I went with the theory that since Alex was out-of-town, if he came home to that he’d want to finish it too. I was semi-right. He wanted it done too, he just had no intention of doing the work.

So this past weekend I tapped off everything I could think of, had Alex move the stinkin’ fridge, and then a really awesome friend and I painted. Y’all remember what they looked like right?

Y’all its glorious! I have white kitchen cabinets.

The best part? After getting this far and knowing I have this next weekend to finish the doors and such Alex hopped on the “Let’s Do This!” bandwagon by voicing opinions on what hardware we should use to finish our kitchen. I’m so stoked.

We know we want brushed satin nickel hardware and simple style, because we’re pretty simple. The one “pop” I was considering was adding something to the inserts of the upper doors.

Something like this:

Only I’d like to use this sheet metal I found at Home Depot. I think it might really look good as a “decorative accent.”

From House to Home

Alex and I went out to Japanese for dinner last night. It’s a rare treat and since the layoff even rarer, but we really just wanted to get out before Alex lost his mind from being house-bound. Once out we stopped by the local Home Depot.

See, Alex being stuck at home has a ton of energy. Energy he plans to pour into painting our bathrooms and our base boards. Me? I have no problem with this since we’ve lived in the house almost 2 years now and they STILL are gray.

We each picked a bathroom color. The hall bath is getting a “Stormy Gray” to go with the seashells and sand we’ve collected from various beaches.

The Master bath is getting a creamy yellow to compliment the green bedroom.

Eventually (read: after Alex is able to get a job) we’ll replace the shower curtain in here with a cream, yellow, and green country plaid pattern.  Something along these lines is what I’m thinking.

Alex has also really stepped up and taken care of the gray trim. The horrible, everywhere you look gray trim. See it’s now becoming a pretty, neutral, white high-gloss trim. It literally makes me shiver in excitement.

It’s so nice to be able to look around our house and feel that deep-in-your gut sense of “home.” This layoff has been rough, but I for one am very grateful that I have a hubby who has excessive energy right now!

Decorating a Black Hole

Do you have a sense of personal style? I sort of do, but I’m having a really hard translating (or maybe even defining) what that sense IT is and then putting IT out there in various areas. One area that I’ve tried to share this is the blog design, but I’m thinking of ways to change that up. To get a little closer to who exactly Alex and I are. You’ll probably start to see reflections of this over the next couple of weeks.

Another area where you gotta have a sense of style, or at least you HOPE to, is decorating your house. Alex and I are very lucky that we share the same sense of style. Dark leathers, dark woods, and warm rich tones pervade our house. Colors such as “country green,” warm cream, and rich brown spill from our kitchen to our living room to our bedroom. I make a few colors pop (hello Orange walls…THEY LOOK GOOD DARNIT) but for the most part I style ourselves as country shabby-chic. With a small twist of “Americana” as well. And this style has led us well in planning every aspect of our house.

Except for one room. [Read more...]

Step one: Measure the area you need to fit a curtain in, contemplate how dang ugly it is and how much you can’t wait to hide such unseemly items from public view.

Step two: Inform the cats that they cannot hide under the rugs. Straighten the rugs and lay out the fabric.
